Legal Dilemmas' Career Exchange

Networking and Branding are two indispensable tools for building a successful legal career. While the former determines a lawyer’s sphere of influence, the latter determines whether he gets a job from a client or potential employer.

Highlighting the importance of networking, Kevin Hurley said: “Success in nearly every aspect of life comes down to your ability to build meaningful relationships -both personal and professional”. It then goes to say that if a lawyer must make a success of his legal career he must as a matter of necessity master the art of cultivating right relationships.

Further, Warren Buffet with regard to branding said: “Your premium brand had better be delivering something special, or it’s not going to get the business”. It means that whether a lawyer gets picked for a job depends on his client’s or employer’s perception of his brand.
It is obvious from the above therefore that networking and branding must be given particular attention by the young lawyer if he wants to build a thriving practice and go far in the profession.

This is why the October edition of our monthly seminars will be focusing on these important subjects so as to adequately equip young lawyers with the requisite skills to build right relationships and market their brands.

The seminar will be facilitated by some of the best minds in the profession who will be bringing to bare their wealth of experience garnered over the years in helping people build networks and irresistible brands.

Nigerian Bar Association: A Body in Dire Need of Corporate Governance

By Peter Akinnusi At this year’s National Executive Council, NEC meeting of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA in Ilorin, Kwara State, the President of the NBA, Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud (SAN), seemed hard-pressed to stress the need to introduce corporate governance and efficient structural management at the Bar.This much has been apparent for quite a while now. He had previously engaged leading consulting firm, KPMG, to carry out an audit, and the report which was presented at the very same NEC meeting did not make for palatable reading. It highlighted the apparent lack of corporate governance culture in the NBA, and how much the NBA was riddled with structural defects ranging from blurred hierarchical lines to less-than-ideal financial and revenue management, as well as anaemic standards for staff job descriptions, evaluation, and training. In other words, the need to inject corporate governance into the NBA has been long overdue. However, this is not the time to dwell...

A Panoramic Espousal of the Nature of Nuclear Weapons: Implications of the Production and Stockpiling of the Weapons by North Korea (1)

By Ifeanyi Chukwunonso OGBODO Esq. LL.B (Hons), B.L Email: iogbodo@gmail.com Introduction In his recent state visit to South Korea, President Trump amidst the pomp and ceremony gave an address with  less threats; a stunt recoil of his first speech at the United Nations General Assembly where he stated that United States will totally destroy North Korea if it failed to stop its nuclear programme. Trump devoted a large part of his address to detailing the human rights abuses that the  Kims have committed in North Korea, filling his speech with words like “tyrant” “fascism” and “cult”. He painfully described North Korea as not just a home to a dictator with nuclear weapons but 25million people who suffer under him  —malnutrition among children, suppression of religion, forced labour at prison camps where north Koreans endure torture, starvation, rape and murder. The sheer scale of the casualties and destruction resulting from the use of a nuclear weapon in or nea...
